Percy Bysshe Shelley -- Rebel Poet

Wednesday August 4, 2004
Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was born at Field Place, near Horsham in Sussex on August 4, 1792. He is considered one of the famous poets of the Romantic period of English poetry. Shelley drew from mythological figures to explore his poetic vision. In "Night,"

"Spirit of Night!
Out of the misty eastern cave,—
Where, all the long and lone daylight,
Thou wovest dreams of joy and fear
Which make thee terrible and dear,—
Swift be thy flight!"
