Wharton Travels
Saturday August 7, 2004
Edith Wharton (1862-1937) was an American writer who traveled around the world, enlivening her tales with the exoticism of far off places. As a child, her family sailed to Europe, spending a year in Rome, and traveling through Spain. They lived in France, Germany, and Italy. Her travels continued in her adulthood. She traveled through Tuscany in 1894, and wrote about her experiences in "A Tuscan Shrine" (1895). In 1900, Wharton traveled to Paris and England, then through Italy, where she gathered material for "The Valley of Decision."
