The Trials & Tribulations of Oscar Wilde -- New Play Staged

Friday November 4, 2005

Oscar WildeThe trials and tribulations of Oscar Wilde are well-known. What started out as a seemingly harmless libel suit lead to the destruction of Oscar Wilde (he was prosecuted and imprisoned). Now, according to Diarmaid Fleming, for BBC News, a new play is trudging up Oscar Wilde's trial troubles. In the play, Oscar Wilde faces off against Attorney Edward Carson. But, of course, as Fleming says: "The devastating cross-examination by fellow Dubliner and contemporary Edward Carson destroyed Wilde, leading to his later prosecution and imprisonment." A Trinity of Two, by Ulick O'Connor, is playing in Dublin until November 12, 2005.
