See John Donne, by Anon

Friday May 26, 2006

John Donne is one of the most famous poets in English literature. He's known for poems like A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning. For the last decade of his life, John Donne concentrated on writing more sermons than poetry.

The public is contributing to the purchase of a portrait of John Donne for the National Portrait Gallery (NPG), according to BBC News. The John Donne Appeal was launched in January to raise the funds to purchase the painting. (The National Heritage Memorial Fund also funded a grant to the NPG.) Sandy Nairne, director of the NPG, called the public response so far "outstanding." There's just £500 left to raise.
