The Reign of the Illiterate

Monday March 19, 2007
A study from the Department of Education apparently indicates that 1/3 of the people in Washington D.C. (our nation's captitol) are functionally illiterate. According to the story, from AP (via Yahoo News), the illiteracy rate of 36% in D.C. compares to the nation-wide illiteracy rate of 21%.

As we celebrate National Reading Month, we should be talking more about the issue of illiteracy. What can you do to make a difference? What resources do you know about in your community? How can we expect to encourage the continued reading of the greatest classics among those who are not functionally literate? Can you imagine not being able to read the classics?

No, can’t imagine not being able to read the classics our teachers told us not to. We can’t steer clear of our literary heritage. How unfortunate for those who find Jane Austin and the Bronte sisters boring.
