Have You Pen-Scanned a Book Lately?
Saturday August 11, 2007
With the high cost of some books, it's probably not surprising that some have figured out a new way to get at the content--without paying the monetary price. According to Zou Qi, in ShanghaiDaily.com, booksellers are dealing with people who visit the bookstore and use scanning pens to copy the content (as they appear to be "reading" the book). According to the article, "A student can scan up to three novels with a single pen in one morning."
So, what do you think about this new way to get at the content for books? What about the legal ramifications? Would you read an illegally scanned book, if you couldn't afford to buy it?

I had never heard of such a thing and I would never, ever do such a thing. If I could not afford it or couldn’t read it from the library or on the internet, I would forego it totally. How people can be so dishonest is beyond me.
Yeah, books are generally on reserve in the library for students in many classes. But, I certainly understand the crisis many students face when it comes to the high cost of books. I guess it’s just another thing bookstores could see (and have to address)–as they struggle to keep their doors open.
The costs of books is terrible, Esther, not to mention tuition. While my oldest GS was just a h.s. Freshman, he began summer college classes, first at Yale, then Princeton and finally Georgetown. Now is is in his last year at a regular University and the tuition bills are unbelievable that have to be eventually paid back. Bookstores will have to address a lot of internet online book reading, as well, since there is so much available online. I love to have a book in my hands and am rereading “Germinal”…in view of the Utah mine collapse, that book really sends shivers down my spine.
