Epistolary Novel in the Rediscovery Vein...
Tuesday February 19, 2008
Some stories, novels, or poems come out only after a bit of detective work... They might have been lost to us, but that's just part of the discovery--in the realization that even the most memorable literature can sometimes slip (or come precariously close to slipping) into oblivion. When Washington Was in Vogue was anonymously published in 1926, and was discovered a few years ago to be written by a little-known librarian, scholar and teacher: Edward Christopher Williams. The novel is a love story--told in a series of letters from Davy Carr to Bob Fletcher, a friend in Harlem. The back story of the novel's discovery is intriguing, but the epistolary nature of the novel also provides a unique experience.
Read an excerpt from the novel. Then, take a look at the review: When Washington Was in Vogue. This Black History Month, rediscover this classic.
