It's 'Talk Like a Pirate' Day! That means (of course) that you'll likely be hearing lots of "Argh" and "Shiver-me-timbers." You may even see a few eye-patches, stuffed parrots and pirate scowls!
So, how many pirates have you met in your life? I'm quite certain that I wouldn't want to meet a pirate on the open sea, but Captain Jack Sparrow has always offered an intriguing figure as a quintessential pirate (or you can imagine the Dread Captain Roberts from Princess Bride. Can you imagine what it would be life to pilfer, pillage and plunder on the open seas? Where would you bury your treasures? And, then to which of the tropical paradises would you retire?
Ah, the life of a pirate! You may recall Tom Sawyer's adventures with his fellow pirates! Or, perhaps you prefer Stevenson's Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Peter Pan, Gulliver's Travels, The Offshore Pirate, tales of Blackbeard, and all the other stories about pirates.
In Life on the Mississippi, Mark Twain writes: "Now and then we had a hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be pirates." Today is the DAY!
