It's THAT time of year... Ghosts and goblins begin to haunt our imagination, and--from a literary point of view--it really is the perfect time of year!
Sure, you can tell scary stories around the campfire. You can scare each other while you sit around with friends--with scary imaginings, late at night. And, you can sit alone at night (and into the wee hours of the morning), devouring those literary vampire tales, werewolf legends and ghost stories.
If you want to fulfill your dearest wish, have you read The Monkey's Paw? If you fear the superstitions around black cats, have you read the story by Edgar Allan Poe? Have you met mysterious, haunting women? Do they remind you of Carmilla? Or, you may just be thinking about ways to survive (or get ahead)--in a true Faustian manner. Perhaps The Devil and Tom Walker is the story you need...
October is a time of crisp, bright days and cool-brisk nights, perfect for curling up with a good book!

I must admit that one of those classic spooky reads I always go for is Henry James’ ‘The Turn of the Screw’. You can read it as a ghost story, or as a psychological horror tale, it works both ways. And it is only a shortish read. And because I used to work on the railways I love Dickens’ original short story ‘The Signal-Man’.
