Friday June 15, 2007
The Purloined Letter - Edgar Allan PoeThe Purloined Letter is one of the most famous short stories by Edgar Allan Poe. This detective story is the final of three short stories featuring Detective Auguste Dupin, a popular Parisian detective. The famous epigram at the beginning of the story means: "Nothing is more hateful to wisdom than excessive cleverness."

Read the story, and then take a look at a review of "The Purloined Letter".

I totally enjoyed that, as well as most of Poe’s stories. His use of the epigram at the beginning was splendid. Oscar Wilde was, of course, the master of the epigram, as was Ambrose Bierce, but Poe obviously was no slouch either.
