The 4th!
Wednesday July 4, 2007
It's the 4th of July. We call it Independence Day in the U.S.--the day we all hang out, watch the fireworks, and think about how many years this country has existed. What are you doing this July 4th? Is your day filled stuff and nonsense, or are you curled up with a good book?
In America, Walt Whitman writes:
"Centre of equal daughters, equal sons,
All, all alike endear'd, grown, ungrown, young or old,
Strong, ample, fair, enduring, capable, rich,
Perennial with the Earth, with Freedom, Law and Love,
A grand, sane, towering, seated Mother,
Chair'd in the adamant of Time."

I was curled up with a good book…”The Fourth Hand” by John Irving. I am maiing it to my teacher granddaughter as soon as the Post Office opens today.
Curling up with a good book is a great way to spend any holiday (or really any day)…
