To-The-Death: Death Be Not Proud

Saturday February 23, 2008
DeathJohn Gunther was already an established journalist when he wrote Death Be Not Proud. He'd also written a number of works of fiction and nonfiction. But, of all of his works, Death Be Not Proud is probably the work for which he will most often be remembered. This study of death has been a comfort to those struggling with cancer and death, and the memoir has also been a way of introducing general readers to an understanding of death. Of course, Death Be Not Proud is also a study of life, helping the reader to realize how precious the days become for a family struggling with the effects of a brain tumor on the life of a young boy, Johnny.

This study guide is a resource to help you come to a better understanding of Death Be Not Proud, by John Gunther. In this memoir, Gunther writes, "A primitive to-the-death struggle of reason against violence, reason against disruption, reason against brute unthinking force--this was what went on in Johnny's head. What he was fighting against was the ruthless assault of chaos. What he was fighting for, as it were, the life of the human mind." Read more quotes.
