Willa Cather Birth: Willa Cather was born in Black Creek Valley, near Winchester, Virginia. When Cather was nine, her family moved to Red Cloud, where the family worked a farm. She would later draw from her early years in Red Cloud, on the Great Plains, for many of her stories and books. She would also write about her experiences with immigrants.
