10: William, son of William Congreve, an army officer, was baptized at Bardsey,
near Leeds. The Congreve family had lived in the country of Staffordshire
for more than 300 years. |
1674 |
| William
Congreve, Sr., was made commander of the English garrison at Youghal, in
Ireland, and took his family with him. |
1681 |
| Young
Congreve was entered at Kilkenny School, where Jonathan Swift was for a
time one of his school fellows. |
1685 |
| Congreve
entered Trinity College, in Dublin. |
1688 |
| The
family returned to England after William Congreve, Sr. inherited his father's
estate. The young Congreve apparently lived with his family in the country
for two years. |
1691 |
| Congreve
moved to London, entered in the Middle Temple, etc. |
1692 |
| Congreve's
first novel was published -- entitled Incognita. |
1693 |
| Congreve's
first play, The Old Bachelor, written two or three years before and
revised with the help of John Dryden, was acted with sensational success
at the Drury Lane Theatre. The success of the play made Congreve one of
the most admired literary figures in London. |
