William Congreve: Important Dates

1670
February 10: William, son of William Congreve, an army officer, was baptized at Bardsey, near Leeds. The Congreve family had lived in the country of Staffordshire for more than 300 years.
1674
William Congreve, Sr., was made commander of the English garrison at Youghal, in Ireland, and took his family with him.
1681
Young Congreve was entered at Kilkenny School, where Jonathan Swift was for a time one of his school fellows.
1685
Congreve entered Trinity College, in Dublin.
1688
The family returned to England after William Congreve, Sr. inherited his father's estate. The young Congreve apparently lived with his family in the country for two years.
1691
Congreve moved to London, entered in the Middle Temple, etc.
1692
Congreve's first novel was published -- entitled Incognita.
1693
Congreve's first play, The Old Bachelor, written two or three years before and revised with the help of John Dryden, was acted with sensational success at the Drury Lane Theatre. The success of the play made Congreve one of the most admired literary figures in London.
