Dec. 10--Emily Elizabeth Dickinson is born.
1833
Feb. 28--Lavinia Norcross Dickinson, sister, born.
May-June--Emily stays with Aunt Lavinia Norcross in Monson.
1835
Sept. 7--Emily begins four years at "Primary Scool".
April 22 --Samuel Dickinson dies in Ohio.
1840
April--Edward sells his half of the Homestead and his family moves to N. Pleasant St.
September 7--Emily and Lavinia begin first year at Amherst Academy.
1842
April--Her brother, William Austin attends Williston Seminary.
1844
May--Emily visits Aunt Lavinia in Boston.
June 4--Emily visits Uncle William Dickinson in Worcester.
June--Friendship with Abiah Root begins (a relationship which lasted through letters for many years).
1845
February--Abiah leaves Amhert; first exchange of letter with Emily.
1846
May 5--Joel Norcross, grandfather, dies.
August 25--Emily goes to Boston for health.
August--Austin enters Amherst College.
1847
September 30--Emily enters Mount Holyoke.
December--Emily sits for daguerreotype at Mount Holyoke (the only image that we have of her).
1849
October 9--Emily, Vinnie, and party climb Mt. Holyoke.
1850
January--Ben Newton sends Emerson's Poems (publ. 1847) to Emily.
February--Amherst College Indicator publishes Emily's "Magnum bonum" valentine.
March 4--Emily sends valentine ("Awake ye muses") to Eldbridge Bowdoin.
August 8--Austin graduates from Amherst.
September--Austin begins teaching at Sunderland.

June 7--Austin begins teaching in Boston.
September 6-22--Emily and Vinnie in Boston.

February 20--Springfield Republican publishes Emily's "Sic transit" valentine.
July 26--Austin home from Boston, through with teaching.

March 9--Austin enters Harvard Law School.

November--Family moves to Homestead.
November--Mother's long illness begins.

July 1--Austin and Susan Gilbert marry.
October 17--Emily's bread wins second prize at Agricultural Fair.

March--Charles Wadsworth calls on Emily.
April 17--Aunt Lavinia Norcross dies.

May 4, 11--Springfield Republican prints Emily's peom "I taste a liquer never brewed" under the title "The May-Wine"

March 1--Springfield Republican prints "Safe in thier Alabaster Chambers".

March 12-- In New York, Round Table prints Emily's peom "Some keep the Sabbath going to church".
March 30-- Springfield Republican prints Emily's poem "A narrow fellow in the grass".

June 16--Father dies in Boston.

June 15--Mother struck with paralysis.

September 10--A Mask of Poets prints Emily's poem "Success is counted sweetest."
