E. M. Forester--A Chronology of His Life & Work

1879 Edward Morgan Forster is born on January 1 in London. His father was an architect of Anglo-Irish extraction. His mother was descended from the Thornton family and the "Clapham Sect."
1897 He enters King's College, Cambridge.
1900 He takes a Second Class in the Classical Tripos, Part I.
1901 He takes a Second Class in the History Tripos, Part II.
1901-1902 He visits Greece and lives in Italy.
1903 His first story, "Albergo Empedocle," is published in Temple Bar.
1905

The Longest Journey.

1908

A Room With A View.

1910

Howard's End.

1911 His first collection of stories, The Celestial Omnibus, is published. He finishes his play, The Heart of Bosnia.
1912-13 He visits India with Dickinson and R. C. Trevelyan. He begins work on A Passage To India.
1914-18 He spends much of the war in Alexandria as a Red Cross voluntary worker.
1920 He is the literary editor of the London Daily Herald.
1922

Alexandria: A History and a Guide is published. He makes a second visit to India.

1923

Pharos and Pharillon (literary and historical sketches) is published.

1924

A Passage To India is published.

1927

Aspects of the Novel.

1928

The Eternal Moment, a collection of short stories, is published.

1934 Goldworthy Lowes Dickinson, a biography, is published.
1936 A collection of essays, Abinger Harvest, is published.
1939

What I Believe.

1951

Two Cheers for Democracy, another collection of essays, is published.

1953 The Hill of Devi.
1956 Marianne Thornton.
