Thomas Acquinas was born in 1225. His father was Count of Aquino; his mother was Countess of Teano. His family was related to emperors and kings. Around 1236, Acquinas was sent to the University of Naples. Some time between 1240 and 1243, he received the habit of the Order of St. Dominic. His brother, who were soldiers under Emperor Frederick captured and confined Acquinas for nearly 2 years, as they attempted to destory his vocation. He was eventually released; and he pronounced his vows.

Although St. Thomas lived less than fifty years, he composed more than sixty works. St. Thomas's works may be classified as philosophical, theological, scriptural, and apologetic, or controversial. His authority was very great during his lifetime. The popes, the universities, the studia of his order were anxious to profit by his learning. Several of his important works were written at the request of others, and his opinion was greatly sought after.
