Kate Chopin was the author of several novels and short stories, including The Story of an Hour, which she published in Vogue Magazine.
The story follows Mrs. Louise Mallard as she comes to terms with the tragic death of her husband.
Brentley Mallard's name is first on a list of "killed" in a local railroad disaster.
We learn of Louise's heart trouble in the story's very first line:
Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband's death.
As the story progresses, however, we learn that her family needs to be worried about much more than just her physical symptoms.
Kate Chopin published The Story of an Hour in 1894, making it one of the earliest examples of feminist literature.
Louise's sister Josephine is the first to inform Louise of her husband's death.
Upon learning of her husband's death, Louise locks herself in her room, where she experiences a surprising emotional reaction.
Josephine assumes that Louise must feel a great deal of grief after learning of her husband's death and worries that, because of Louise's heart condition, those emotions could cause her to become sick.
The story's final line explains:
When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease — of the joy that kills.
