by Esther Lombardi

Discussion Questions

Are you still having a tough time understanding Francis Bacon and his use of rhetoric? Try defining some of the words that he uses. Archaic English words can sometimes complicate the process of understanding. Try answering some of these questions:

  1. Which of Bacon's idols is the most difficult to understand? Can you define it?
  2. Does enumeration help you to understand what Bacon is trying to accomplish in this work?
  3. Which of Bacon's idols are still relevant in today's world? Why?
  4. What kind of reader did Bacon expect to read this piece? How does he direct his language and arguments to his expected audience? Do you think his projection to that audience makes it more difficult for you to understand the work?

Try thinking about the work in the context of Bacon's world. Then think about how Bacon's arguments could relate to the modern-day experience.
