"Don't join the book burners. Don't think you're going to conceal faults
by concealing evidence that they never existed. Don't be afraid to go in your
library and read every book... "
--Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890 - 1969)
"I have always
imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library."
--Jorge Luis Borges
"No place
affords a more striking conviction of the vanity of human hopes than a public
library."
--Samuel Johnson (1709 - 1784)
"What is more
important in a library than anything else than everything else
is the fact that it exists."
-- Archibald
MacLeish
The theme for this year's event is "@ Your Library," designed to get library patrons thinking about all of the great services libraries offer. "National Library Week is a perfect time to launch The Campaign for America's Libraries to the public," said Nancy Kranich, American Library Association President. "National Library Week is our national holiday, a time to open our doors to the public and remind everyone about our various programs, services and technologies. It's also a time to say 'Come see what's new @ your library.'"
The National Library Week runs from April 1-7, 2001. It's an even more important effort, as libraries have become increasingly diversified, with Internet capabilities and new, interactive features available in many libraries across the country and around the world.
Consider this... The American Library Association says, "More than a million books are published each year more than 100,000 titles in the U.S. alone... Some 45,000 newspapers and professional newsletters are published in the United States... Nine hundred new magazines were introduced last year, bringing the total to more than 40,000." And all of those publications and literary resources are in addition to all of the Classics that already fill the shelves of libraries.
Since libraries have played such an important role in the lives of so many literature lovers, it's only fitting that we should set aside at least a few days... a week to recognize and appreciate what libraries represent. Libraries open up a whole world of possibilities...
