Every so often an event takes place that makes us appreciate books even more. Such an event is taking place this year... as the World's Classic series of Oxford University Press turns 100 years old.

The World's Classics series was off to a great start in 1901 with the publication of Charlotte Brontë's "Jane Eyre". In 1905, Oxford University Press acquired World's Classics and published 150 titles in the first two years after the purchase. Two million small books had been sold in that time.

In those early days, readers could buy an Oxford World's Classics edition book for around a shilling. It was a mini-hardback with stitched binding, head-and-tail bands, high-quality paper, and a paper jacket. A few of those small Oxford hardbacks still exist in public and private libraries, but for the most part, we find the new Oxford Classics in paperback... That is, until this year.

As part of the Centennial celebration in 2001, Oxford University Press has re-launched the World's Classics series in hardback, with two additions: Thomas Hardy's "The Mayor of Casterbridge," featuring an introduction by the acclaimed author of "The Ice Storm" and Demonology Rick Moody, and Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," introduced by renowned suspense novelist and author of "The Bone Collector" Jeffery Deaver.

To make this Centennial celebration even more exciting, Oxford University Press is featuring a Classics Quiz. And, every participant has the chance to win: First Prize, a complete set of Oxford World's Classics in hardcover (16 books); Second Prize, featured title(s) for this month; and Third Prize, a T-shirt. The names of participants who answer the questions correctly will be placed in a "hat," from which the winning names will be drawn every month.
