It's the twenty-fourth day of December. It's Christmas Eve. Are you dreaming of everything that will come on Christmas Day (the 25th)? The Declaration of Christmas Peace takes place. Gifts are given and exchanged, and food is set out for Santa and his reindeer.

On this day in 1816, Joseph Mohr wrote the poem, Silent Night (it was set to music by Franz Xaver Gruber in 1818):

"Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace..."

Take a look at the reading selection for today.

What do writers say?

"Christmas isn't a season. It's a feeling."
- Edna Ferber
