By , About.com Guide

Reading is one of the most enjoyable activities in life, but you may not have discovered the right reason to pick up that volume and plow through the thick or thin. So, here area a few words of encouragement--in the form of reasons you should read. Of course, there are many more reasons than this... If you'd like to contribute more reasons, please let me know!

1. You want to be entertained...

2. You want to be an interesting individual...

You've probably met more than one person who is extremely well-read. If they are anything like some of the more interesting readers I know, the book knowledge just seeps from them. Even if they don't always know all the details, they can often converse on some of the most interesting literary topics! It's true! If you've read a great deal, you'll have a conversation piece on many topics wherever you go: interviews, coffeehouse discussions, chats with friends, and so much more.

3. You want to become a better scholar or writer...

4. You want to know what happened in the past...

5. You want to travel, but can't afford the ticket...

6. You want to become a better person...
