Book Collecting - Why are book club editions not valuable?

By Esther Lombardi, About.com

Question: Book Collecting - Why are book club editions not valuable?

Why are book club editions not valuable?

Answer: Book Club Editions (including the Book of the Month Club, Doubleday Book Club, and the Literary Guild) and many other mass-market editions are usually considered to be of little or no value. However, there are some notable exceptions.

If the edition is a first edition, the first appearance in hardcover, scarce, or a collectible classic, the book may still be worth something.

Also, while Reader's Digest books are usually the most ostracized of these kind of editions because of the condensed format, these books may also be of some value, depending on the title and the scarcity of the book. Of course, a number of factors need to be taken into consideration if/when you collect book club editions.
