(1892-1973) American writer. (Pseudonym John Sedges) Pearl S. Buck is perhaps best known for The Good Earth, for which she received the Pulitzer Prize and other awards. She also received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1938.

In 1904, Joseph Pulitzer made provision in his will for establishing the Pulitzer Prizes--to recognize excellence in writing. Since 1917, famous American writers like Edith Wharton, Willa Cather, Pearl Buck, Thornton Wilder, etc.
