Fate - Theme

The Fates were three goddesses (Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos). The word "fate" has come to be a force or power that acts upon a character. In the plays like "Oedipus Rex," the king is fated to kill his father and marry his mother.

Fighting Against Fate
So, according to Emerson, we find ourselves in the great sea of Fate, buffeted by death, disease, destruction--all of the unexpected events that fill our lives.

The Mother of Oedipus: Destined to Sorrow
Oedipus married his mother and murdered his father, but there are other characters in the tragedy ... Jocasta was the mother who lost her son, husbands, and even her life.

The Fate of the Children of Lir
"Now at the time when the Tuatha de Danaan chose a king for themselves after the battle of Tailltin, and Lir heard the kingship was given to Bodb Dearg, it did not please him, and he left the gathering without leave and with no word to any one; for he thought it was he himself had a right to be made king."
