It may seem that buying a book for your father is the easiest gift, but what book(s) do you pick? What would he enjoy? And what would he really read? Here are some ideas that should get you going in the right direction. Have fun shopping for your father!
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Varies
Here's How:
- Does your dad enjoy the outdoors like my dad does? Perhaps he'd like to read about Mt. Everest, Antarctica, the Lewis and Clark Expedition or other adventure memoirs.
- What about spy novels? Tales of James Bond (and other literary spies) are always fun to read and watch. You father might be thrilled with a spy collection.
- Stories about adventures are fun--no matter what a person's age or experience. Your father might enjoy tales of pirates. American Sea Writing is filled with lots of thrilling works. And, of course, Jack London is also a great choice for anyone who loves to read about the sea and adventure!
- Almost everyone enjoys a good mystery (or detective novel)! Have you thought about getting him a good Edgar Allan Poe collection? There's always Agatha Christie. Or, what about the ever-popular Sherlock Holmes? The tales of Sherlock Holmes never go out of style?
- What about getting your dad a book about sports? He may enjoy reading a book about baseball.
- If your father prefers to read nonfiction books, he may enjoy reading biographies of Anton Chekhov, Benjamin Franklin, C.S. Lewis, Charles Dickens, D.H. Lawrence, Daniel Defoe, Dante, Edgar Allan Poe, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Geoffrey Chaucer, Homer, J.D. Salinger, J.R.R. Tolkien, Jack London, John Steinbeck, Mark Twain, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Washington Irving, William Bradford, or William Faulkner.
- Let your dad know how much he means to you--by getting him a collection about fathers. These collections offer inspirational stories about dads in literature.
