(1911-2006) Egyptian writer. Naguib Mahfouz received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988. The Swedith Academy of Letter noted that "through works rich in nuance - now clearsightedly realistic, now evocatively ambiguous - [Mahfouz] has formed an Arabic narrative art that applies to all mankind."
