It is very rarely that early English literature presents us with a memorable heroine. With the exception of Shakespeare and a couple of others, truly exceptional female characters were few and far between, until women themselves started writing with more frequency during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. However, quite to the contrary of this trend, Daniel Defoe's Moll Flanders presents a heroine who is intelligent, resourceful, and capable.
