John Steinbeck Birth and Education:
He was born on February 27, 1902 in Salinas, California. His father was a treasurer and his mother was a teacher. He enjoyed Crime and Punishment, Paradise Lost, and Le Morte d'Arthur as a boy. He attended the local high school, then went on to study at Stanford University.

In 1928, he met Carol Henning while he was working as a tour guide and caretaker in California. He married her in January 1930. They divorced in 1943.
He married Gwyndolyn "Gwyn" Conger in 1944. Together they had two children: Thomas ("Thom") Myles Steinbeck in 1944 and John Steinbeck IV (1946–1991). The marriage ended in divorce in 1948.
